10 Tips to Make Moving Easier

So, you finally found your dream home at Easton Park, and you can’t wait to move in! It’s an exciting time in your life until you realize how much stuff you have. Here are 10 moving tips from the pros to help make your big move easier.

1. Downsize

Sort through all of your belongings and throw away or donate everything that you no longer use. Moving is a great time to get rid of the miscellaneous stuff that begins piling up in junk drawers and in the back of hallway closets. If you haven’t worn that coat all year, donate it. If you’ve only burned that candle once since the 90s, throw it away. The more you purge unnecessary items, the less you will have to pack up and move.

2. Wrap your dishes and other breakables in towels and sheets to save on bubble wrap

Pack smaller glasses and coffee mugs with socks. Not only is it the eco-friendly way to move, but it helps you save money on packing supplies and time by moving two items at once.

3. A little organization at the beginning goes a long way

Label each box with its contents and which room it belongs. That way when it is time to unpack, you can unpack one room at a time instead of running from room to room.

4. Cover dresser drawers with plastic wrap

Why unpack all of the contents of a drawer, put them in a box, move that box and the drawer separately, then unpack the contents of the box by placing it back in the drawer when all you have to do is place wrap the drawer with plastic wrap and move the drawer? Done and done.

5. Pack the items you will need right away

Tuck away items like toilet paper, towels, shower curtains, pillows, toiletries, sheets and a set of dishes in a clear plastic box for easy access in your new home.

6. Load heavy furniture into the moving truck first

Don’t be afraid to flip sofa and sectionals on their sides. Then, load lighter furniture before loading your boxes. Make sure when loading boxes to load the same room boxes near each other. That will make the unloading process quicker and easier.

7. Keep Ziploc bags handy

They are perfect for keeping up with tiny screws, brackets and nails when taking items off walls or deconstructing furniture. They are also great for keeping up with remote controls and various cords.

8. Keep valuable items with you

Fill a special box with important papers, passports, jewelry and heirlooms you want to keep safe and move them yourself.

9. Pack an overnight bag

You will not be unpacking in a day, so make sure you have a change or two of clothes, toiletries, a towel, medication and whatever else you will need to easily grab in your first couple nights in your new home.

10. Have Fun Moving

Moving can be a long and painful process but the end result is what makes it all worth it. Enjoy the process and just know at the end of it, you will be in your new home! Happy moving!
